How Scientists Solved Mysterious Signals Detected Globally
Unusual 'humming' signals were detected globally by the scientists and this baffled them; here's how the mystery was solved...
Washington: In September 2023, scientists monitoring global seismic activity detected unusual signals that stretched from the Arctic to the Antarctic, as per the recent reports.
These signals were a continuous hum with a single frequency vibration and lasted for nearly nine days, unlike typical earthquake waves.
Initially perplexed, researchers dubbed the phenomenon a ‘USO’: an unidentified seismic object.
The mystery was eventually unraveled, with the source traced to a massive landslide in Greenland's remote Dickson Fjord.
An enormous volume of rock and ice, enough to fill 10,000 Olympic swimming pools, had plummeted into the fjord, generating a mega-tsunami with waves towering 200 meters high, twice the height of London's Big Ben. The landslide also triggered a seiche, a standing wave that oscillated within the fjord for nine days.
The immense power behind this event was linked to global warming.
A new study published in Science revealed that the seismic signals were produced by standing waves in Dickson Fjord, caused by the rockslide. "Our findings emphasize how climate change is driving dangerous interactions between the cryosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere," the researchers concluded.
