If cricket lovers of the country are asked about the most memorable Mohammed Kaif innings ever, most of them would mention his knock of 87* in the 2002 NatWest trophy final at Lord’s. With the ex-cricketer celebrating his 38th birthday on 1 December, the famous cricket ground had a special message occasion.
The official Twitter handle of Lord’s cricket ground tweeted a video of the moment when Zaheer Khan hit the winning runs in the nail-biting final. Kaif is seen sprinting for the first run and diving to make his ground, getting up in an instant, running for the second one after an overthrow and jumping in the air in joy before completing it.
His captain Sourav Ganguly’s passionate reactions after the victory is one of the most memorable moments in Indian cricket. Yuvraj Singh, whose partnership with Kaif had won the match for India from a precarious situation, runs towards him and gives his partner a tight embrace. Conveying birthday wishes to Kaif, the handle wrote how his heroics in his ‘Man of the Match’ performance on that day had sparked a famous celebration.
Kaif was touched by the gesture and conveying his gratitude, replied that the ‘Mecca of Cricket’ was not just an ‘iconic cricket ground’, but one that held a ‘very significant place ‘ in his life.
Kaif was known as one of the most prolific fielders in the history of Indian cricket. He announced his retirement from cricket in July this year. The ex-cricketer had since then turned a commentator and joined the Congress party for the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
Kaif also won the inaugural IPL season as a Rajasthan Royals player and was named as Delhi Daredevils Assistant Coach last month.
