Oman openers Jatinder Singh and Aqib Ilyas smashed unbeaten half centuries on Sunday as the T20 World Cup co-hosts thumped debutants Papua New Guinea by 10 wickets in their opening first-round Group B game in Muscat.

Asked to bat first, PNG lost both openers without a run on the board, then a national record 81-run partnership for the third wicket between skipper Assad Vala (56) and Charles Amini (37) threatened a surprise.

However, after they were dismissed the PNG innigs faded and they could only muster 129 for 9 from their 20 overs.

Vala's opposite number Zeeshan Ashraf returned figures of 4-20 - another national record in a T20 - to earn the player of the match award.

Singh hit four sixes in his 42-ball 73 and Ilyas made 50 from 43 as Oman easily reached the target with more than six overs to spare.
