Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders by nine wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday to end the league stage as table-toppers. The three-time champions edged past the defending champions Chennai Super Kings on the basis of a superior net run rate despite registering an equal number of wins and sharing the same points. Even the final league game had some good moments including KKR' opening partnership, Lasith Malinga's dual strikes in the same over that tilted the momentum in Mumbai's favour, Krunal Pandya's electrifying catch and an entertaining batting performance from MI's top order. However, there was yet another important moment that involved the KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik. After an unfortunate end to his innings courtesy of a brilliant catch by Krunal Pandya at mid-wicket, the KKR skipper made an impact during the second innings behind the stumps.

It happened in the seventh over of Mumbai's run chase which was bowled by Prasidh Krishna and Quinton de Kock was on strike. Mumbai had already scored 46 runs in the Powerplay overs. On the very first delivery, Prasidh bowled a simple one as the South African wicket-keeper batsman attempted a big shot. Nonetheless, the shot was not timed well and the ball went a long way up in the air. Dinesh Karthik, who was keeping wickets had his eyes on the ball from the moment it was hit in the air as he ran and covered a lot of distance. His efforts paid off as he took a spectacular catch which was incredible as the 33-year old had to run a fair distance and also had to stay focused as he was running back.

However, that was the only thing which the visitors could rejoice at as Mumbai crossed the finish line with less than four overs to spare. Skipper Rohit Sharma (55) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) ensured that there were no further hiccups as MI won their final home game of this season.

Earlier, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma had invited KKR to bat first. They got off to a good start riding on a 49-run stand between openers Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill. After their dismissal, KKR's innings started to lose it momentum. Veteran batsman Robin Uthappa's 47-ball 40 took the visitors to 133/7 in their 20 overs.
