After Pakistan shattered South Africa's hopes to enter semi-finals, Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis admitted that their efforts were 'just not good enough' and called it 'embarrassing.'
Du Plessis believes that this is the lowest point for the South African Cricket team. He takes pride that he represents the nation and is the skipper of the side but he is extremely disappointed with how the team's World Cup campaign has been and he described the team's performance as 'borderline'. The team is embarrassed that their efforts are not providing them the results. He also agreed that the team's poor performance has started to affect him.
South Africa faced a 49-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan on Sunday after they failed to chase the target of 309 runs, set by Pakistan.
While talking to a publication, Du Plessis said that they are repeating their mistakes but praised the spinner Imran Tahir, who took two wickets while giving away just 41 runs from his 10 overs against Pakistan. Other than that he thinks that their bowling unit didn't contribute well in the game against Pakistan and that's unfortunate because bowling has been their strength in this tournament this far.
South Africa have only won one match in this tournament and that victory too came against the bottom-placed team on the points table, Afghanistan.
Talking about his team's performance in the premier tournament, Du Plessis said that they have played 'way, way below' their potential.
Du Plessis said that the squad is capable of so much more but they haven't been up to the mark, they are not playing to their potential. He also confessed that he would also like to contribute more, he said he is trying as hard as he can but unfortunately, failing. He said if he could he would take his wand out and add the runs on the board, stressing on the fact that the batting unit has not fired all their cylinders.
With the loss against Pakistan, South Africa's World Cup campaign won't reach the semis. But they still have to play to more matches and redeem themselves and entertain their fans. South Africa will now compete against Sri Lanka on June 28.
