Spectators have been allowed to return to soccer matches in Serbia as of Monday, June 1, after a three month break caused by the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

Serbia is one of the first countries that had allowed spectators to return to soccer fixtures and stadiums.

The first official game played with spectators was the Serbian Soccer Cup Quarterfinals match between Indjija FC, a local club, and FC Red Star Belgrade.

Only around 800 hundred fans were allowed to attend the match due to social distancing safety measures, still in place in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

But the spectators at the stadium didn't seem to mind sitting closer to each other as they watched the two teams clash on the pitch.

Protective masks and gloves were a rare sight. It seems that the euphoria of soccer had taken over, as the fans enjoyed themselves and cheered their teams on.

"Look, I have goosebumps, I'm so happy. This is beautiful. This (the pause in soccer) was hard to endure. It's no one's fault, it was simply unavoidable," Miodrag Jankovic, a local resident from Indjija and a soccer fan had said about his emotions before the game.

Marina Stanisavljev traveled some 70 kilometers from the town of Pancevo to the town of Indjija to attend the game.

"I am ecstatic. I can't wait for the game to start. We're finally here, I can't wait for it to start and to cheer for my team," Stanisavljev said.
