Italian club AC Milan are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren. The club looks to sign the defender in the January 2020 transfer window. The Italian giants were strongly linked with a move for the Croatian during the previous summer transfer window, but the centre-back could not make the move and decided to stay at Anfield as the Italian club was not able to meet Liverpool’s demand of £20m.

The 30-year-old has only made two Premier League appearances for the Reds this season and has fallen behind Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk in the pecking order. He has been largely restricted to the bench. Matip's current injury troubles could see Lovren enjoy a run in the XI, although there remains widespread speculation surrounding the 2018 World Cup finalist's future. AC Milan’s defender Mattia Caldara's injury problems could force Milan into the January market for a new centre-back and Lovren remains a transfer target for the Serie A giants. The former Southampton defender has made 174 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

AC Milan aims to cover up for Mattia Caldara

Lovren was a regular member of Klopp’s XI till the 2017-18 season, having featured alongside Van Dijk in the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid. However, after an injury in the FIFA World Cup, he has been out of favour for Klopp. He has shown the quality as a bench player or a stop-gap addition, but since his aim is to play regular football, it’s hard to achieve that at Anfield. Come January and Dejan Lovren could again be tempted to leave if a better opportunity comes by. AC Milan, who are struggling with injuries, could reportedly re-approach the player once again, as a replacement of Mattia Caldara.

There’s no indication of a fee or if it could be a loan move at this point, but this move could make sense. Lovren will surely want to put himself in the best position to play for Croatia at Euro 2020 and realistically that means playing games which he may get at Milan.
