The success of clubs in the English Premier League (EPL) has always had a lot to do with the manager's tactics. A lot depends on the manager’s tactics and philosophy. Whether it is playing the long ball or playing possession football, each manager strives to implement his philosophy on the way his team plays. Whenever a new manager enters the dugout, the spotlight is on his transfer policy and tactics. For pundits and connoisseurs of the game, it’s the game plan and strategies that define a manager.

Here are the three most successful managers in the history of the EPL:

1. Sir Alex Ferguson

A Master of the game. There is simply no other way to describe him. Sir Alex Ferguson won a seldom believable 13 EPL titles. He claimed the competition’s very first title with Manchester United setting the stage for two decades of domination by his team. His team attacked in waves and 'Fergie Time' became folklore in the EPL. The EPL and Manchester United are still recovering from his retirement. That says it all. Ferguson won it all.

2. Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho arrived at Chelsea fresh from winning the Champions League with Porto. With money to spend on transfers, the Portuguese went on to record the two highest points total in the EPL with Chelsea till Guardiola's Manchester City broke that record recently. Mourninho's team are far more defensive and are accused of parking the bus on occasion. After two stints with Chelsea, Mourinho went on to manage Manchester United as well.

3. Arsene Wenger

Forget all the recent arguments when Arsene Wenger stepped down as the Arsenal manager and remember that he is the only manager who has won more EPL titles than anyone besides Mourinho and Ferguson. He was also the manger of the Arsenal "Invincibles" of 2003-04. Wenger arrived as a relative unknown from Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight and took the EPL by storm with his mesmeric brand of possession football. He went on to manage Arsenal for a record 1,235 games over 22 years.
