Chicago Red Stars team-mates Casey Short and Julie Ertz shared a tearful embrace as they took a knee in support of Black Lives Matter during the US national anthem before Sunday's NWSL Challenge Cup game against the Washington Spirit.

Short started to cry after taking a knee at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah and Red Stars captain Ertz supported her fellow US international, which reduced both players to tears.

Washington would go on to win the match 2-1.

The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup is a one-off tournament in Utah that marks the return of the National Women's Soccer League season after the easing of distancing rules in the USA due to the coronavirus pandemic.
