Former Scotland and Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty has died aged 92.Known as The Doc, he had struggled with a long illness before passing away at his home in the north west of England on December 31st.

Docherty started his playing career with Celtic in 1947, but is best known as a right half for Preston North End, where he made 324 appearances between 1949-58.Throughout his time at Preston, he received 25 caps for Scotland, including captaining the national team in their famous 3-1 victory over West Germany in 1957.

In 1958, Docherty joined Arsenal, where he played until 1961, then moved to Chelsea as a player/manager for a season, before taking up the top job full time and guiding them to League Cup success in 1965.He would go on to coach 12 other clubs in England, Portugal and Australia, with his most memorable spell his five-year stint with Manchester United, where he took them from relegation to FA Cup success over Liverpool in 1977.

He also managed Scotland from 1971-72, but left as they were on course to reach the 1974 World Cup finals, to take the job with United.

He later said he regretted that decision, admitting he left Scotland because of the money on offer at Old Trafford.
