Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's Manchester United had the chance to move up in the Premier League table but their dreams of achieving that were dashed after they slumped to a 2-0 defeat against West Ham with goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell in an away match on September 22.

West Ham sink the Red Devils

The home side exerted pressure on the Red Devils from the very first minute and were rewarded for their performance with a goal by Yarmalenko right before the whistle went off ending the first half. David de Gea was unable to stop the half volley.

In the second half, Manchester United showcased a better performance but an ankle injury to their forward, Marcus Rashford, took away any hope of winning the match that saw them come down to the 8th position. The match ended with a goal by Cresswell 5 minutes from time.

The Red Devils went back home with a very big injury list while the Hammers registered their third win of the 2019-2020 season.
Manchester United did not have their first choice forwards and that made them struggle against a firm West Ham defence that stopped every attack from Daniel James and Marcus Rashford not giving them enough space to create chances for themselves.

West Ham's patience finally paid off when they found a gap in United's defence and left-back Aaron Cresswell scored the second goal with a 25-yard freekick 5 minutes from time.

A word from the United manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that it was not a result that he had expected but knowing the boys, they will bounce back with better results in the upcoming matches. He added that the game had moments that favoured West Ham in terms of the two goals they scored. Ole further said that they also created chances that could have been attempted but were not appreciated on time and that cost them the match. He said that United will come back stronger and a team that has improved over time.

'A much-deserved win'

Celebrating the win, West Ham's manager, Manuel Pellegrini said that they were ready to play against Manchester United and it was a big thing for them that they tried to win the match from the very first minute. He further added that they lost possession a lot of times but the first goal played a very important role in winning the game for the home side.
