National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday the league was wrong for not listening to players fighting for racial equality and encouraged them to peacefully protest. In a video posted on social media, Goodell said the NFL made his strongest statement on the issues many players passionately support.

The NFL has been a flashpoint for protests over police violence ever since Colin Kaepernick began kneeling in 2016 during the national anthem before games.Kaepernick has since gone unsigned by any NFL team and emerged as a leading voice in opposition of police violence.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees apologised on Thursday after a backlash over an interview earlier in the week where he said he believed the protests were disrespectful of the American flag and military.US president Donald Trump, who was highly critical of the protests, tweeted that Brees shouldn't have to apologise for his comments.
