A hard-fought win

Kovac said, "Union defended outstandingly well, they made life difficult for us. I'm satisfied with my team's performance. We didn't allow anything from open play and had a number of big chances, unfortunately we didn't take them. Eventually, we'll convert more of our many chances. We are where we wanted to be, we're at the top of the table." Bayern Munich registered their fifth win of the season courtesy goals from Benjamin Pavard and Robert Lewandowski. Berlin managed to score in the closing stages of the game courtesy a penalty from Sebastian Polter.

Lewandowski's goal made all the difference for the German champions and the Polish striker is continuing his excellent form over the past few years. He made history on Saturday evening as he became the first player to score from each of the first nine games of the season, breaking former Borrusia Dortmund striker, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang's record. Aubameyang, at the start of the 2015/16 campaign scored in each of the first eight matches. After the match, Lewandowski said, "I'm not thinking about how many goals I've scored, I'm thinking about how we can take the next three points. That's what's in my head. I'm glad about the records but I don't focus on these things, I focus on football, training, and sport." Kovac was full of praise and said, "He's in the form of his life, he's in top physical shape. We're really glad we have him, he's the one who keeps us at the top at the moment."

Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga for seven straight years since the 2012/13 season and are looking to continue the streak.
