Oman vs India: Will Sunil Chhetri and Co. make it out of Group E?
As per the qualification criteria specified by FIFA, the group leaders of all eight groups will progress to the third qualification round along with four best runners-up for the World Cup to be held in Qatar three years later. Since Qatar gains automatic qualification on account of being the hosts, the fifth-best runner up in their group will join seven group winners.
.
After four rounds, Qatar dominate Group E. If India want to qualify, they have to finish second by a greater margin than runners-up of the three other groups. India’s qualification hopes face an uphill battle because of the gap between India and the top two teams in Group E - Qatar and Oman. The two sides are seven and six points ahead of Chhetri and Co. respectively. In order for India to remain in contention for a spot in the next round, they will have to play against Oman as if their life depends on it and secure an all-important win on Tuesday night. Can they do it?
