Premier League 2019-20 leaders Liverpool travelled to Bramall Lane to play newly-promoted Sheffield United on matchday seven of the 2019-20 Premier League season. The atmosphere at Bramall Lane was as intimidating as it gets coming from the footballing city of Sheffield. Liverpool would definitely have felt the nerves as a number of teams do when they visit Anfield. Georginio Wijnaldum scored the only goal of the game which was to Sheffield’s troubled luck squandered by goalkeeper Dean Henderson. The match ended 0-1 and Liverpool maintain their winning run in the Premier League with eight wins out of eight.
Liverpool played a full-strength team against Sheffield and the first half was tightly contested. The team from Merseyside dominated in the initial phase with Sheffield players almost parking the bus with goalkeeper Dean Henderson trying to keep out attacking firepower of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. Sheffield's first chance came through McBurnie but his shot was fired straight at Adrian. Liverpool full-backs Trent Alexander Arnold and Andrew Robertson kept switching flanks and supported the attack, mounting pressure on the home side.
Sheffield stepped up their game in the second half as they looked to derail Liverpool's winning run in the Premier League. Fabinho's low volley was blocked well in the early stages of the second half with Mo Salah having a go as well. Fleck and Robinson pushed Sheffield's attack on and Liverpool's rock at the back - Virgil van Dijk - didn't give away anything and was under pressure for quite some time. The big moment came after 69 minutes when Gini Wijnaldum struck a volley, which wasn't remotely close to a shot which could be the winner, crept through goalkeeper Dean Henderson's legs and the on-loan player made an absolute mess of it. Liverpool players had finally broken Sheffield's resolve and their celebration said it all as they knew what that goal meant. Things could've gotten worse for Sheffield as Mo Salah was through on goal only for Dean Henderson to stand strong and keep the Egyptian from scoring at Bramall Lane. Sheffield had an opportunity to bag a late equaliser but Fleck's pass to Robinson was shot over Adrian's goal and thousands of Sheffield United fans were left disappointed as it was a golden chance for their team to make something from a tough afternoon.
Liverpool have now won at 56 different stadiums in the Premier League, more than any other side (Man Utd and Spurs 52). They next play Leicester City at Anfield while Sheffield United visit Watford. Liverpool sit top of the Premier League with 21 points while Sheffield United are currently 12th with eight points.
