The first half was a tight affair with few chances for either side. However, the match opened up after Son slipped Dele Alli in behind the Everton defence to roll an assured finish past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The game then took a drastic turn after a challenge from Son led to a serious injury to Andre Gomes, which resulted in a straight red for the Tottenham midfielder. Both teams looked visibly upset and there was a long delay for treatment before the play resumed. Eventually, though, Everton made their numerical advantage count and deep into 12 minutes of stoppage time they found an equaliser through Cenk Tosun's firm header.
