Premier League clubs can heave a huge sigh of relief as they have been reassured that their automatic Champions League fourth-place qualification is secured for now. The head of the European Leagues, Lars Christer Olsson, suggested going back to the old rule of just three guaranteed Champions League places for Premier League teams from 2024 onwards. According to reports, the Premier League have told Olsson that they were 'surprised and disappointed' by the said proposal.

Olsson has apparently convinced the Premier League that the proposal is not concrete for now. The rule of four automatic qualifications started just two years back, before which the fourth-placed team had to qualify to join the group phase through a play-off system. If the new rule is implemented, then it won't just be the Premier League who will stand in opposition. It will be joined by the likes of the Serie A, LaLiga and the Bundesliga.

The European league organisation have expressed their urge to work with Premier League and all other major leagues to come up with ‘common principles’ in the long run. In response, the Premier League have been satisfied by the response before this week’s meeting. The much-awaited meeting will include representatives from fan groups and the international players' union FIFPro. However, Olsson’s idea to remove the 'historical co-efficient' element of Champions League revenues- 27 million euros to Chelsea and 90 million euroos in total to the four English clubs have not been given much importance.
