Spurs eye AS Roma's Lorenzo Pellegrini to replace Christian Eriksen: Report

Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign AS Roma's midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini to replace midfielder Christian Eriksen, who might leave.

Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur have set their eyes on AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to British media reports on Tuesday. With a possible departure of Christian Eriksen in the upcoming January transfer window, Mauricio Pochettino would be already looking at replacements for the Denmark International.

Eriksen’s contract with Spurs expires in the summer of 2020. Hence in order to avoid a free move for the Dane, Spurs would be looking to cash on the player in the winter transfer window. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are all being linked with the 27-year-old.

The £51 million-valued Pellegrini is the man believed to be replacing Eriksen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 23-year-old has broken through in the AS Roma ranks in the past few seasons and has also gained 12 caps for Italy. However, he has made just six appearances in all competitions this season after suffering from a foot injury in September 2019. Pellegrini has assisted on four occasions this season and is yet to find the back of the net for his side. He scored two goals and assisted thrice in the previous season, hence he is trying to better himself.

Hakim Ziyech is also an option

However, Pochettino is also reportedly looking at other options for the midfield. The Argentine tactician is keen on signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. The Moroccan football star has scored seven goals and has eight assists in all competitions so far this season. He has been phenomenal for Ajax in the previous seasons as well. He scored 21 goals with 13 assists in the previous campaign, inviting huge interest from major clubs across Europe.

Tottenham have endured to a difficult start this season after last season’s Champions League heroics. They are presently 14th in the Premier League table, with very fewer chances of playing in the Champions League next season. Therefore,it needs to be seen as to who Pochettino trusts to lead the midfield for Spurs.
