Praise towards the Indian football team has been flowing in, especially with Sunil Chhetri taking to Twitter to congratulate the team. Currently ranked 103, India were the underdogs in the match against Qatar, ranking 62. The Indian football team managed to pull off a massive upset by holding the reigning Asian Football Cup Champions to a draw, in which neither of the sides managed to score.
Dear India, THAT is my team and THOSE are my boys! Cannot describe how proud I am at this moment. Not a big result for the table, but in terms of a fight, as big as it can get. Huge credit to the coaching staff and the dressing room. #QATIND— Sunil Chhetri (@chetrisunil11) September 10, 2019
The Indian Captain could not be part of the team as he was bedridden with a high fever and was declared unfit to play. It was Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who stepped up to the occasion, after being named interim captain against Qatar. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s heroic saves and performance prevented India from suffering another defeat and kept the team’s hopes of qualifying for the 2022 Qatar World Cup alive. Right-winger Udanta Singh came close to pulling off a goal against the reigning Asian Cup Champions, falling just short of a successful attempt. The Indian team did exceedingly well and managed to keep their composure to earn this historic draw.
Sunil Chhetri is India's most distinguished and successful football player, having won multiple honours, and with a successful international career.
