Toronto FC defeats D.C. United 5-1, ends Wayne Rooney's MLS career

Toronto FC defeated D.C. United 5-1 in the first round of the playoffs of MLS on Oct 19, which marked an end to Wayne Rooney’s career in the American League.

Toronto FC defeated D.C. United 5-1 in the first round of the playoffs of MLS, which marked an end to Wayne Rooney’s career in the American League. Rooney will return to England to join Derby County. Toronto had scored only one goal till the 90th minute but the extra-time outburst change the complexion of the game completely, even after Lucas Rodriguez scored an equaliser for D.C.United in the 93rd minute to balance the game. Jonathan Osorio scored twice while Richie Laryea and Nick DeLeon added one goal each to register a decisive victory over D.C. United. 

Extra-time outburst

After the equaliser by Rodriguez, Toronto scored in the 93rd, 95th, 103rd, and 105th minute. Marky Delgado scored the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute and looked like Toronto will seal it 1-0 till Rodriguez found the net in the 93rd minute. The game went into extra-time and Toronto took no time get a 2-1 lead over D.C. United. After that, Toronto never looked back and scored three goals in a period of 11 minutes.

Atlanta United vs New England

In another playoff game, Atlanta United registered a win over New England after Franco Escobar scored one in the 69th minute and the team was able to hold the lead for the rest of match. Escobar scored his second goal of the season for the defending champions. Ezequiel Barco gave a short pass to Escobar at the right side of the box and the latter shot it over a diving keeper Matt Turner which led to New England’s fifth defeat against Atlanta this season.

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas

Seattle Sounders, with the help of Jordan Morris’s hat-trick, defeated FC Dallas 4-3 in the playoffs. The game went into extra-time after Bryan Acosta scored in 82nd minute to balance the game with 3-3. The first goal of the game was scored by Raul Ruidiaz in the 18th minute, while Morris score in 22nd, 74th and the decisive 113th minute.
