UFC: Will Dustin Poirier fight in the featherweight division again?

Dustin Poirier has been active in the lightweight division for a long time. However, the veteran made his UFC debut in the featherweight division. Know more.

Dustin Poirier recently lost against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 after a five-win streak in the lightweight division. Dustin Poirier became the interim lightweight champion after defeating Max Holloway at UFC 236 and got his title shot against Khabib. However, the fighter has a lot to prove in the lightweight division and has no chances of going back to the featherweight division. Khabib started his MMA career in the 145-pound category, but he is determined to not go there again.

UFC news featherweight run

Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway have fought each other in both the divisions and Dustin got the win every time. In his 32 bouts, Dustin Poirier has won 25 matches, lost six and one no-contest. He has lost four times in the featherweight division but lost only twice in the lightweight division against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Michael Jhonson. His featherweight losses came against Conor McGregor, Cub Swanson, Danny Castillo and Chan Sun Jung  After his loss at UFC 242, a lot of fans wanted to see him back in featherweight but he confirmed in a tweet reply to his octagon-rival Max Holloway that he is not coming back at 145 pounds. His tweet has made a lot of fans wonder about the dream matchups in the featherweight division.

UFC news: Dustin Poirier lightweight journey

After Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson is likely to get a title shot against Khabib and after the match is done, Dustin Poirier can get back into the title-run. Dustin Poirier has already defeated fighters like Anthony Pettis, Justin Gatheje and Eddie Alvarez in his lightweight journey but a re-match with Conor McGregor in lightweight will be a great night for UFC fans. Despite staying away from UFC for such a long period, Conor McGregor is still the third-ranked lightweight fighter. UFC President Dana White has confirmed that Conor is looking for a comeback very soon and a rematch with Dustin Poirier can be a great welcome.

Khabib Nurmagomedov showed a lot of respect to Dustin after the match and praised his boxing skills. Dustin Poirier might get his hands on Khabib in the future again but for now, he has a number of options. Justin Gatheje is also rising high in the lightweight division. Justin is currently at rank four and he has high chances of fighting again with Dustin Poirier in the near future. Dustin has immense striking skills and it is good news that he is staying back in the 155-pound category.
