It seems like Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has garnered a negative reputation in major European football leagues. There was heavy criticism directed towards VAR over the weekend in the English Premier League. Liverpool's Roberto Firmino was falsely given offside despite a VAR consultation and Tottenham's Heung-min Son was harshly sent off for a rash tackle on Andre Gomes. However, there was more VAR-related drama as AS Monaco's Ruben Aguilar lashed out at the VAR monitor on the pitch after he saw red in the 0-1 loss to ASSE yesterday.

Monaco's Ruben Aguilar lashes out at VAR monitor after being sent off

AS Monaco player Ruben Aguilar was given his marching orders from referee Jerome Brisard in the 92nd minute of the Ligue 1 game as Monaco succumbed to a 0-1 defeat at Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Aguilar was sent off after a rash tackle on ASSE goalscorer Denis Bouanga as the last man in defence. While VAR did not intervene with the referee's on-field decision, Ruben Aguilar was visibly annoyed with the referee's call.

Aguilar let the anger get the better of him and kicked the pitchside VAR monitor while making his way to the dressing room. His anger with the VAR may have been for an earlier decision when Saint-Etienne's Wesley Fofana's red card was overturned by VAR due to a marginal offside call.
