WORLD CUP 2018: Brazil create goal scoring record in win over Mexico

Brazil are the most successful team in the World Cup history. With five championships under their name, they stand one ahead of Italy and Germany, who have four each. But in the ongoing World Cup 2018, neither of the two are in contention, so Brazil's record is safe, and instead, they have the opportunity to move ahead.

They beat Mexico 2-0 in the round of 16 to progress to the quarter-finals. The first goal was scored in the 51st minute by Neymar. While that gave his team the lead, it also propelled them another record.

Coming into the match, Brazil had scored 226 goals in the World Cup finals history, and were tied with Germany in the first spot. But as soon as Neymar put the ball in the back of the net, they went on top with their 227th strike.

Also, the win means Brazil have advanced into the quarter-finals for the seventh consecutive tournament. For their opponents Mexico, the defeat was an unwanted one. They have now been knocked out in the round of 16 for the seventh consecutive tournament.
 

Neymar was the star of the match as Brazil overcame the Mexican challenge. The score was 0-0 after first half, though, both the teams created decent opportunities. Willian was the best player in the match in the first half, constantly attacking the Mexico defense with his pacey runs. And in the 51st minute, he produced a moment of magic which led to the first goal.

Neymar cut inside from the left, before back heeling the ball to Willian. The Chelsea man showed great pace and got in the box, before putting the ball on plate for Neymar, who tapped in an empty net.

And in the stoppage time, the five-time champions confirmed their place into the quarter-finals. Fernandinho, who came in as a substitute, got the ball in his own half and marauded into the opposition half before playing the ball to Neymar.

The No.10 was free on the left side and made his way into the box. He had a chance to try his luck, but instead, he picked out Firmino with a delightful square pass. The Liverpool striker then put the ball in the empty net to double the lead.
