French hurdler Pascal Martinot-Lagarde said on Monday that public safety must come first when governments will start considering when to allow sporting events to resume after the impact of the coronavirus will ease down in the world.

The bronze medalist in the 110-metres hurdles at the 2019 World Championships also said that postponing the 2020 Olympic Games to next year was the right decision to make sure that all countries will be able to compete on an equal ground.

Despite many cancellations in the sporting calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic, the European Athletics Championships are still scheduled to take place in Paris in late August this year.

France is one of the worst-hit countries in the world, with almost 100000 cases and at least 8900 victims so far.
