Motorbike rider Romano Fenati slapped with two-year ban for pulling opponent's brakes

Moto2 rider, Romano Fenati, who grabbed the handbrakes of an opponent rider during the San Marino Grand Prix, has been slapped with a two-year ban by the sport's governing body, the FIM.

Following his infamous incident, Fenati was initially banned for two races. But now, after severe deliberation, it has been revealed that the tainted Moto2 rider won't be able to race until 2018.

Romano Fenati was engaged in a fierce battle with compatriot Stefano Manzi during the course of the race, where the incident was reported to have occurred. Both riders were pulling out of sharp turn at the Misano circuit, just when Fenati reached out for the front brakes of his fellow countryman to pull him back.

The video footage revealed that Manzi clearly losing control of his bike, but he was fortunate enough to regain his balance. But, Romano Fenati was immediately disqualified for 'irresponsible driving' and was also given a two-race suspension by the MotoGP officials. 

 Several racers from the motorsport fraternity condemned the incident and questioned the governing body's decision to only impose a two-race ban for the shameful act. In the wake of his controversy, the Italian rider was summoned at the FIM headquarters to address the situation. The governing body termed the incident as an "egregious and shocking" act. 

On Friday, they further released a statement stating that they had suspended the license of the racer and he would officially not be able to race until 2018. 

"Following the discussion with the rider and his representative, the FIM decided to withdraw Mr. Fenati's FIM licence until the end of the current calendar year. A new FIM licence for the 2019 season may be granted to him subject to the conditions laid down in the FIM regulations."

The FIM also emphasized its concern for the safety of all riders, while also reminding Fenati of his responsibilities to his fans and the younger riders. Fenati's extended ban comes after his contract was terminated by the Marinelli Snipers Team. The Motor racing team suggested that they had ended their partnership with the 22-year old for his "unsporting and dangerous conduct". 

Following this sacking, Roman Fenati issued a statement of apology for his shameful actions. The Italian driver insisted that the recent incident was "not who I am", further adding that: "People who know me well know it." Read the whole statement here.
