Coco Gauff, 15, becomes youngest tennis titlist since Nicole Vaidisova

Coco Gauff won the first WTA title defeating Jelena Ostapenko, becoming the youngest titlist since Nicole Vaidisova. The teenager did it after 15 years.

The 15-year-old Coco Gauff won her first WTA title defeating Jelena Ostapenko, becoming the youngest titlist since Nicole Vaidisova in 2004. Gauff lost the opening match of the tournament but made to the draw when a player was forced to withdraw due to an injury. She went on to get her first top-10 win after proceeding to her first quarter-final match and eventually bagged the title. Coco Gauff defeated 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in Austria, on Sunday.

Ostapenko, who currently seems to be out of form, had the momentum cruising into the final. Gauff just dropped one set 1-6 in their three-set battle to win the match. The last set proved to be worthy for Gauff, who looked composed and clean with her shots, winning the third set by 6-2. Talking to the press after the match, Gauff said that this is a memorable moment for her and she would cherish it for the rest of her life.

The teenager eagerly waited to celebrate her win as the final point ended on an Ostapenko challenge. She raised her arms in joy, and she looked at the box, smiling at her parents. Gauff also thanked the crowd and her fans for their constant support. In WTA rankings, Gauff is expected to rise inside the top-75 after her win. She was a guaranteed inclusion in the top-100 after her first couple of wins. The youngster has surpassed the record of Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic as she won at Vancouver and Tashkent in 2004, by the age of 15 years and five months.
