Daniil Medvedev record in 2019 speaks for itself improving to 29-3 on hard courts since his third round loss at Wimbledon winning two ATP Masters 1000 titles.

Daniil Medvedev’s journey to World No 4 has been inspiring post his third-round defeat at Wimbledon. The Russian had lost to Belgium’s David Goffin in a five-set thriller but the journey following that has been tremendous featuring in six consecutive finals on the ATP Tour. Medvedev won his first two ATP Masters 1000 titles — in Cincinnati and Shanghai — and also entered his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open this year.

Medvedev’s record in 2019 speaks for itself improving to 29-3 on hard courts since his third-round loss at Wimbledon. The Russian has reached a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world. He has also earned five of his eight victories against Top-10 opposition and tops the list this year with 59 tour-level wins – which is 11 more than current World No 1 Novak Djokovic.

Western and Southern Open:

This title will be best remembered by the Russian for his semi-final triumph over Djokovic in the semi-final and overcoming cramps late-match against Goffin in the final. The World No 1 Djokovic was not ready to throw the towel earning a breakpoint with a 6-3, 3-2 (30/40) lead. But Medvedev turned up the aggression to beat the top seed in three sets. In the final, he overcame cramps to beat Goffin to earn his first Masters 1000 title.

St. Petersburg Open:

After a heart-breaking loss in Flushing Meadows, Medvedev stepped up his game in front of his home fans. Before entering the final against Borna Coric, he had lost three consecutive matches against the Croatian last year. But this time he dropped only four games en route to claim his sixth ATP Tour title.

US Open 2019:

The Russian was making his maiden appearance in a Grand Slam final. Before the US Open, Medvedev had made the fourth round of a Slam only once. In the final he once again earned a rematch with Nadal. Nadal once again stormed into the lead, winning the first two sets and breaking in the third set. But Medvedev showed his resolve, battling hard to extend the legendary lefty to a deciding set before going down in final after four hours and 49 minutes.

Shanghai Masters Triumph: Medvedev claimed his second Masters 1000 trophy beating Alexander Zverev in the final. This was his first meeting against the 22-year-old and the Russian came out on the top with scoreline of 6-4, 6-1.

Daniil Medvedev’s US Open controversial moment

During his match against Feliciano Lopez in their US Open third-round clash, Medvedev lost his cool with one of the ball boys handing him a towel. The audience at Flushing Meadows began to rain down boos for his behaviour. The match umpire handed Medvedev an unsportsmanlike conduct code violation for the incident. Medvedev also went on to launch into a verbal argument with the umpire.

Things went out of hand when Medvedev was spotted walking back to his chair holding up his middle finger on the side of his face. The gesture was picked up by fans when it was shown on the replay screen, but he wasn’t handed a second violation from the umpire.
