Roger Federer wins his 1,500th ATP match in hometown Basel

The 38-year-old, Roger Federer took 53 minutes to win his 21st consecutive match at the Swiss Indoors Basel. Federer beat German Peter Gojowezyk 6-2, 6-1.

Playing in his 1500th tour match, 38-year-old Roger Federer took 53 minutes to win his 21st consecutive match at the Swiss Indoors Basel. Federer beat German Peter Gojowezyk 6-2, 6-1 in his hometown Basel on Monday, October 21, 2019.

Praising the opponent

Talking to the press after his win, Federer summed up the match as excellent. The Swiss mentioned that he had a good spring in his step and was quick onto the ball. Roger Federer acknowledged his opponent’s capability. He stated that Peter Gojowezyk had put on some great performances in the qualifiers, and knew the match would not be easy. He especially praised the German’s game against Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic.

Federer broke five times and made the best of the indoor conditions to improve his tally to 72-9 at the ATP 500 event. At the end of the match, he had 34 winners to just18 unforced errors. It is safe to say that World No 3 is aiming to win his 10th Basel title. Another tournament that the tennis ace has won 10 times is the Noventi Open.

The Swiss is already qualified to play the Nitto ATP Finals for a record 17th time. Federer will next meet Dusan Lajovic of Serbia or Moldovan Radu Albot. In other matches of the tournament, Australian Alex de Minaur beat Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien 6-1, 7-5. He will now face the winner between American Taylor Fritz and second seed, Germany's Alexander Zverev. The German is currently in seventh place in the ATP Race To London. The top eight contenders will compete at the Nitto ATP Finals, between November 10-17 in London.

Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff beat Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-2, and will face Swiss wild card Henri Laaksonen. The Swiss defeated eighth seed Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 7-5 in front of the home crowd.
