With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series approaching soon, a lot of attention will be on the cricketers going through a lean phase. One of them is Steve Smith, who has yet to push limits and score big numbers on the scoreboard. While he has been a Test cricket stalwart, the batter's fate in T20Is remains in chaos as he has yet to make a statement in the limited-over format. With the IPL buzz also pacing up due to the auction, Steve Smith has opened up on the possibility of playing the IPL after he failed to impress any franchise in the previous auction.

During an appearance with Fox Cricket, Steve Smith opened up about his absence from the IPL and was a part of the broadcast team. The Australia batter said that he still has what it takes to play and would love to compete, given he receives a chance from one of the ten franchises in the upcoming auction.
"I hope so. I thought I played quite nicely, in terms of international T20s I don't know what's going on there. You know they've obviously got some people they want to bring in and I think that's fine. I'd certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I have thrown my name in the hat and let's see how we go," Steve Smith said.

Smith has been off the IPL since 2021 and had registered for the auction for the 2024 season. Surprisingly, he was not picked up in the first round of the auction. But he went on to perform quite well for MLC as Smith scored 336 runs at a strike rate of 148.67 in July while leading the Washington Freedom to their first Major League Cricket championship.
In addition, he was named Player of the Match for his 52-ball 88 against the San Francisco Unicorns in the championship game. The Australia batter will also compete in the Big Bash League, where he will be a part of the Sydney Sixers.
