'He chases excellence': R Ashwin names India's standout player from Team India's World Cup squad

Following the culmination of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, R Ashwin has named a player who he deems was the standout performer for India in the World Cup.

Barring the performance in the final, it will go down as a World Cup to remember for Team India. Virat Kohli breaking the record of scoring most runs in an ODI World Cup, Mohammed Shami crossing the 50-wicket mark in the World Cup and ending up being the leading wicket-taker of the competition, Rohit Sharma's intent at the start, and securing 10 wins in a row, were some of the biggest highlights that Team India would be proud of. Aside from that there emerged some more standout players in the tournament from the Blue outfit, one of which has been mentioned by Ravichandran Ashwin.

R Ashwin mentions standout player of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023

As the hangover of the World Cup final loss has begun to settle, members of the World Cup squad have also started to reflect on what has transpired in the last one-and-half-month. Ravichandran Ashwin, who runs a dedicated YouTube channel recently used to medium to express his thoughts on Team India's performance in the World Cup.

R Ashwin paid heed to numerous topics and in the process named the player who he deems was the standout in India's lot.

“Batting against spin and taking them down is Shreyas’ speciality and he is a standout performer. Chasing excellence is a rare commodity in sports. If somebody does something unique, people, instead of appreciating it, tell them not to do it.”

Ashwin showers further praise on Iyer

He further lay forth on the mentality of Shreyas Iyer and was impressed with the way he tackled the short ball problem in the World Cup.

“What I love about Shreyas is that he chases excellence, he took a note to master the pull shot and worked on it. He got out on it but look at the number of balls he put away to the boundary."

It was Shreyas Iyer's first ODI World Cup. He started slow but quickly found his rhythm and ended up accumulating 530 runs in the campaign, to conclude the campaign as the 7th leading run-scorer.
