ICC inducts Virender Sehwag into Hall of Fame along with Aravinda de Silva and Diana Edulji

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has inducted former India opener Virender Sehwag into the Hall of Fame, alongside World Cup winner Aravinda de Silva of Sri Lanka and former India captain Diana Edulji. The ICC recognised Sehwag as the eighth Indian men's cricketer in its Hall of Fame. Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Vinoo Mankad have all been the previous entrants from India, into the Hall of Fame.

ICC inducts Virender Sehwag into Hall of Fame

One of the most feared and fierce batters of his time, Virender Sehwag, has garnered immense respect from the cricket's governing body ICC. On Monday, ICC announced via X about the fresh inductees of the Hall of Fame Award and put focus on three names. Along with Sehwag, former India captain Diana Edulji and legendary Sri Lankan batsman Aravinda de Silva have been inducted into glory.

Sehwag thanked the ICC for inducting him into the Hall of Fame, adding that he feels grateful for spending a great part of his life hitting the cricket ball.

“I would like to thank the ICC and the jury for inducting me with this honour. I feel extremely grateful for having spent a great part of my life doing what I loved most, ‘hitting the cricket ball’. I would also like to thank my family, friends, people I played with, and countless people who prayed for me selflessly,” said Sehwag.

Other inductees of the year

Meanwhile, Edulji made history when she was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame as the first Indian women's player. Edulji took 109 wickets in 54 matches for India across all formats, and she was a pathfinder for women's cricket in India for many decades.

Aravinda de Silva, a legendary Sri Lankan batter, became the fourth Sri Lankan to be admitted into the Hall of Fame, following Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene.

De Silva's century in the 1996 World Cup final helped Sri Lanka win the World Cup. In 93 Tests, he scored 6,361 runs at an average of 42.97 and took 29 wickets. In 308 ODIs, he scored 9,284 runs at an average of 34.90 and took 106 wickets.
