Despite India's defeat against South Africa in the first Test, Virat Kohli managed to register a unique record in Test cricket on Thursday.

India was handed a humiliating loss by South Africa as the hosts secured a brilliant victory over the visitors. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian side lost the match by an innings and 32 runs. Virat Kohli stood tall as he scored a fighting 76 in the second innings.

Virat Kohli scripted another unique record

In the proceedings, the majestic Indian batsman also registered another record to his name. The 35-year-old became the first batsman to score 2000 runs in seven calendar years. He had previously achieved the feat in 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs) and 2019 (2455 runs). Virat scored 38 in the first inning and followed it with a brilliant 76 in the second inning. Despite his heroic effort India failed to capitalise and the Nandre Burger-led Proteas bowling lineup tore through their lineup.

Jasprit Bumrah's runout following a brilliant effort in the field by Dean Elgar caused a mood of dismay. A brilliant review from the South Africa team saw Mohammed Siraj gloving the ball straight to the wicketkeeper. Prasidh Krishna struggled hard but Jansen got the better of Kohli (76) which brought an end to India's struggle within the first three days.

India will now face South Africa in the second Test at the Newlands Cricket Stadium, Capetown from January 3rd.
