'I rest my case!': Angelo Mathews provides new evidence after bizarre dismissal by Shakib Al Hasan
Angelo Mathews became the first batter in the history of international cricket to be timed out after Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed.

During the ODI World Cup 2023 match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, all-rounder Angelo Mathews experienced an unusual dismissal when he was given out for 'timed out.' He strongly believed that his dismissal was unfair and not in line with the “spirit of the game”. Angelo Mathews didn't hold back in expressing his frustration and anger following the match. He presented evidence to counter the fourth umpire's explanation, asserting that he had indeed reached the crease within the stipulated two-minute timeframe.

Angelo Mathews shares new evidence
In his quest to prove his point, Angelo Mathews shared a video that precisely documented the time it took for him to reach the center of the field and take guard. Posting this new evidence on X (formerly Twitter), Angelo Mathews wrote, "I rest my case! Here you go, you decide."
Angelo Mathews was declared timed out when he allegedly failed to arrive at the crease within two minutes after Sadeera Samarawickrama's dismissal. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan made the appeal, and the umpire's decision was to uphold Mathews' dismissal in accordance with the rules of the ICC ODI World Cup. Despite a conversation between Mathews and Shakib, the decision was not reversed, leading the experienced all-rounder to depart the field.

‘I have lost my respect for Shakib’: Mathews
With this, Angelo Mathews became the first batter in the history of international cricket to be timed out. According to commentator Ian Bishop, Mathews, and the on-field umpire urged Shakib Al Hasan twice to take back his appeal but the Bangladesh captain refused. After the match, Shakib explained his stance saying that he was at war and whatever he did was within the laws of cricket.

In the post-match press conference, Angelo Mathews said that he lost all respect for Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team after the incident on the field. Sri Lankan players even refused to shake hands with their Bangladeshi counterparts after the match ended in their 3-wicket defeat.
