The Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) revealed the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies in June. Remarkably, experienced all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been named team captain, a big move after he became Sri Lanka's full-time T20I skipper in December 2023. Southpaw batsman Charith Asalanka will also take over as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Together with young players, the squad includes seasoned players like Dasun Shanaka, Kusal Mendis (ODI captain), and Dhananjaya de Silva (test captain). The lineup gains depth with the return of seasoned all-rounder Angelo Mathews, a major player in Lanka's 2014 title win. With the intention of adding strength and variety to Sri Lanka's pace attack for the T20 World Cup 2024, the selection committee has selected Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera, and Dilshan Madushanka in the fast bowling category.
Group D comprises Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal.
On June 3, Sri Lanka will play South Africa to start their league-stage adventure. On June 7 they will play Bangladesh. They play Nepal in their third group stage game on June 11 and the Netherlands on June 16.
Starting on June 19 and lasting until June 25, is the Super 8 stage. June 26 and 27 will then see the semi-finals, and June 29 will see the final.
