In match number 40 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, England once again found themselves in a spot of bother, however, Chris Woakes stepped up and played a formidable role with the bat to build a crucial 129-run stand for the 8th wicket. The partnership transported England from a troublesome situation to a comfortable position in the match.

Ahead of the superior Strokeplay showcased by both batters, there came a moment when it was all laughs on the ground. At the time of his arrival, Woakes showcased a broken helmet strap to the umpire to avoid getting timed out. He had a big smile on his face bringing into attention what had transpired the day before yesterday.

Angelo Mathews' controversial dismissal

It should be noted that Angelo Mathews became the first-ever player to be given Timed Out in the match. His dismissal became the bearer of controversy as he claims he was in the center within the permissible duration, yet was given out. Mathews showcased his broken helmet strap to reason why it took longer for him to take the guard. However, the on-field officials remained unfazed after Shakib Al Hasan's appeal and directed him to leave the field.
