Virat Kohli's form throughout the T20 World Cup 2024 has been a major zone of debate as the batter has failed to impress at the opening position. Alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat led the charge in terms of batting. But it did not turn in his favour as he failed to contribute with the bat. Criticism was raging upon Kohli coming in to bat as the opener, but his latest numbers turned out to be disappointing. The Rohit Sharma-led Team India emerged as the top favourites of their group and have made their way to the Super 8 stage. But will the team stay with Kohli? Team India veteran offers his say in the situation.

Ex-India veteran continues to back Virat Kohli despite uneven form at New York

Former Team India cricket Wasim Jaffer, while speaking in one of his videos on his YouTube channel, is still backing Virat Kohli despite his shambolic form in the US leg of matches in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Jaffer admitted that the talismanic player isn't the top run scorer in the tournament, he does write off Kohli as a blazing score machine.

"Rohit and Virat have been playing on the tough New York pitch so they aren't quite among the top run-scorers. But do not write off Virat Kohli.

"As the tournament will get to its business end, he will show his true colours and he will show his greatness. I had picked Virat Kohli as the highest run-scorer and I will stick to him," Jaffer said on YouTube.

Wasim Jaffer further added that Virat Kohli should continue to remain in the opening stance and not bat at the number three despite heavy criticism. The veteran cricketer argued that Rishabh Pant is well-settled in the position, and it has been working out in the team's favour.

"I don't think Virat Kohli should bat at No. 3. He should continue to open because now you have got Rishabh Pant at No. 3 and now it has been working out really well. You ideally want a left-hand right-hand opening combination and while you have Jaiswal, that doesn't seem possible," Jaffer added.

Before heading to the Super 8 stage in the West Indies, India will play their final group-stage match against Canada at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 15, 2024.
