Batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar lauded Shreyas Iyer's remarkable performance, asserting that the young cricketer was not concerned about his own place in the team during India's match against Sri Lanka on November 2 in Mumbai. Shreyas' sensational innings saw him score a dazzling 82 runs off just 56 balls, embellished with three boundaries and six towering sixes, one of which measured an astounding 106 meters. His extraordinary display was pivotal in India's colossal victory over Sri Lanka by a staggering 302-run margin at the Wankhede Stadium, securing India's spot in the World Cup 2023 semi-finals.

Shreyas' ability to shrug off prior apprehensions about his vulnerability to short-pitched deliveries and struggles to accumulate substantial runs in the World Cup was evident as he dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Speaking to Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar extolled Shreyas' performance and remarked on his unselfish approach during the match, dispelling doubts about his batting capabilities. Gavaskar also highlighted the importance of shot selection and the role Shreyas plays in the team.

Gavaskar stated, "I think Nasser (Hussain) mentioned that earlier that he wasn't playing for his place in the team. He was looking to get the scoreboard ticking, he was looking to play the big shots. So, he really wasn't concerned about himself, you know?"

While acknowledging previous concerns about Shreyas' place in the team, Gavaskar emphasised, "He just needs to, at some stage, be a little careful about his shot selection. Otherwise, you know that's the reason why he's at number four and not Rahul. Rahul is at five. But here I think today, you know, he set to rest all doubts about his batting," said Gavaskar.
