Mohammad Shami is now India's highest-ever wicket-taker in World Cup history, goes past Zaheer Khan

Mohammad Shami's remarkable performance against Sri Lanka also propelled him into the top 10 of the highest wicket-takers in ODI World Cup history.

IND vs SL: In the Mumbai showdown of the 2023 ODI World Cup between India and Sri Lanka, Mohammad Shami made history by becoming India's all-time highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Shami's exceptional performance lifted him above Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath, placing him at the summit with an impressive tally of 45 wickets in ODI World Cups, courtesy of his exceptional five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka on Thursday. This was his second five-wicket haul of this year's ODI World Cup with his first coming against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22.

Mohammad Shami becomes India's top wicket-taker in ODI World Cup history

Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath, both legendary Indian bowlers, share the second spot with 44 wickets each in ODI World Cup history. Mohammad Shami's remarkable achievement also propelled him into the top 10 of the highest wicket-takers in ODI World Cup history, a list currently led by Glenn McGrath, who boasts an astounding 71 wickets.

Among active international cricketers, only Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult occupy positions higher than Mohammad Shami on this list, with 56 and 49 wickets to their names, respectively. Shami's remarkable performance against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on November 2 saw him secure his third five-wicket haul in World Cup history. Notably, he now shares the record for the most five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups with Mitchell Starc.

India vs Sri Lanka

India bowled Sri Lanka out for a mere 55 runs, winning the game by a massive margin of 302 runs. Apart from Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj picked up a three-wicket haul, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each. Earlier in the match, India posted 357/8 in 50 overs thanks to brilliant knocks from Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88), and Shreyas Iyer (82).
