Mohammed Shami overtakes Zaheer Khan

Mohammed Shami took another fifer of his ODI career as Team India bundled out the Sri Lankan batting lineup for 55 runs during match 33 of the ODI World Cup 2023 which was played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Pace sensation Shami surpassed bowling greats Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath to emerge as India's top wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup. Senior fast bowler Shami has now positioned himself in the pantheon of greats at the greatest stage of them all the World Cups. In just 14 innings, he has claimed 45 wickets for the Men in Blue. Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan claimed 44 wickets in 23 innings, while pacer Shami accomplished the incredible feat in 14 innings. During the World Cup, former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath also took 44 wickets in 34 innings.

The 33-year-old pacer isn't one to throw parties, but when he got rid of Kasun Rajitha for his fifth wicket in the game, there was a moment when the veteran bowler fell to his knees. It was obvious how he felt. Having missed the first four games, he now has 14 wickets in three games, so perhaps it was a sense of vindication. Perhaps it was the joy of having the most wickets of any Indian bowler in ODI World Cup history. Whatever the case, the festivity was incredibly moving.
