As they did in the 2019 World Cup, former all-rounder Scott Styris thinks New Zealand should rely on their skilled and diverse bowling unit to defeat India. Styris expressed his thoughts prior to the much-awaited round-robin match between India and New Zealand in Dharamsala.

3 things you need to know

  • India will take on New Zealand on October 22, 2023
  • Both teams are undefeated in the ICC ODI World Cup so far
  • India's last win over New Zealand in an ICC event came in the 2003 World Cup

Scott Styris says New Zealand could rely on their bowling again

The former all-rounder for New Zealand continued by saying that the Blackcaps have a wealth of experience and diversity in their bowling unit. Along with Mitchell Santner's conventional left-arm spin, Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and Lockie Ferguson makeup New Zealand's outstanding bowling lineup.

"The strength of the Black Caps is going to be their bowling. I think they are going to employ a similar strategy to what they did in the 2019 World Cup where they relied on their bowling. They've got a lot of experience, they've got a lot of variety," Scott Styris said on JioCinema's daily sports show #AAKASHVANI.

Styris highlighted the team's competence by mentioning Mitchell Santner,  and the quickies who can swing the ball, both ways. He also complimented Lockie Ferguson's pace and mentioned Matt Henry's effectiveness with the new ball.

Balance in bowling line-up could fetch result against India

According to Styris, the squad should refrain from embroiling into a power struggle and instead concentrate on effective bowling strategies that limit rival scores, as they have done well in previous competitions.

"You've got the left-arm spinner (Mitchell) Santner, you've got the right and left-arm fast bowlers who can swing the ball. Matt Henry is very good with the new ball in particular and Lockie Ferguson with that pace he has. I think now they should buck the trend and stay away from the power game and rely on the bowlers doing their job and keeping the opposition down to the slightly lower score to chase," Styris added.
