Shubman Gill ranks joint fastest in ODI runs, joins Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid in a remarkable feat

Shubman Gill racked up an ODI half century and also secured a big achievement as he competed against Netherlands in the ODI World Cup

Star Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has now joined the exclusive club of batsmen who have accumulated 1500 or more ODI runs in a single calendar year. Shubman Gill reached this milestone with a rapid half-century in India's final league-stage match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 against the Netherlands in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Shubman Gill joins Sachin Tendulkar in elite list

Remarkably, Shubman Gill achieved the feat in just 27 innings, making him the joint-fastest alongside the legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar and former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden. In the history of men's ODI cricket, Shubman Gill becomes the sixth batsman to achieve the milestone of scoring 1500 runs or more in a calendar year.

The other five cricketers who have accomplished this feat are Sourav Ganguly (1999, 2000), Rahul Dravid (1999), and Saeed Anwar (1996). Tendulkar achieved the feat twice in 1996 and 1998.

India secure big numbers against Netherlands in final ODI group stage match

As far as the match between India and the Netherlands is concerned, Shubman Gill scored 51 off 32 balls. Rohit Sharma (61) and Virat Kohli (51) also scored a half-century each. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul scored a century each in the match. KL Rahul smashed the fastest ton by an Indian batsman in the history of the ODI World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, smashed an unbeaten 128 off 94 balls and won the player of the match award after India bowled the Netherlands out for 250 runs. Interestingly, nine bowlers bowled for India in the match including Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
