When Rohit Sharma stepped on the field of St Lucia to play Australia in the Super 8 clash in T20 World Cup 2024 he made his intentions very clear from the very first delievery. He was batting for India but he was batting for ‘payback’.

Despite falling eight runs short of what could’ve been a memorable hundred, Rohit Sharma’s blistering knock of 92 runs in 41 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 224 sent a very clear cut message to Australia in the T20 World Cup. The message - their dominance in cricket is hanging on a thread as it is time for payback of what happened on that dreaded day on November 19th, 2023.

‘It’s payback time’: Rohit Sharma’s blistering knock

India and Rohit Sharma has been hurting ever since they lost the ODI World Cup final at home against Australia back in November. Their first meeting in ICC events ever since the final presented a unique opportunity to India. They could knock Australia out from the Super 8 of the tournament itself with a win tonight. 

And as it turned out, Rohit Sharma did not fail to put on a show. He was exquisite in his shot selection and ran rampage on the Aussie bowlers. He smashed seven fours and eight sixes in the innings to start India’s innings on fire. 

In a splendid display of shots he smashed Josh Hazlewood for a six on one knee and in the 7th over he gorgeously slog swept Adam Zampa for a six. It was then when former Indian Cricketer Dinesh Karthik who was on commentary duties burst out on the broadcast saying, “It's payback time for what happened few months ago,” alluding to that World Cup final.
