Lalengmawia Ralte, or Apuia as he is fondly known has been a revelation in Indian football. The youngster ticks almost all the major qualities which a versatile midfielder should have. Mumbai City FC reportedly played a hefty transfer fee to NorthEast United in 2021 and since then the midfielder has been the backbone of Des Buckingham's side.

3 things you need to know

  • Apuia joined Mumbai City FC from NorthEast United
  • The young midfielder has been a shining light in the ISL
  • he is regarded as the next big thing in Indian football

In an exclusive interview with republicworld.com Apuia opens up on a number of aspects.

You have played in a number of positions. You are sometimes deployed higher up the pitch while your natural position is right just in front of the defensive line. What is your favourite position?

I think I've said this a few times my favourite position is the number six. I started playing as a six during my stint with NorthEast United. It also depends on how the coach wants me to play. Always a number six but if my team needs me I can also play as a number 10 because then I will also have more chances to score goals and create more chances. As you asked me I would prefer as a number six.

You are currently one of the highest-paid young players in Indian football. Has that added extra pressure on you?

I don't know that I'm the highest-paid player. So there is no added pressure.

Are you happy with the amount of games you’re playing for the national team?

As a player, everyone wants to play the maximum number of games. I don't think I have played a maximum number of games. I'm not that happy that I'm not playing as much as I should. I'm not that happy. And also I should work hard and try to be on the team.

What is your take on Igor Stimac’s four-week preparation camp for the AFC Asian Cup?

It is between the AIFF and the clubs. If they can agree on such things then I have no objection from my side.

What makes Des Buckingham different from all the other coaches you have played with?

Every coach has their qualities. He is young and energetic. he pushes us a lot to make us better players. Especially for me, the trust he has in me is very good for me as a player. He is a great coach.

If you had to choose between Mumbai City's ISL trophy and India's qualification to the FIFA World Cup what would you prefer?

I would want India's qualification to the World Cup because Mumbai City FC already lifted the ISL title once. So it's going to be a historic day in Indian football if we can make it to the FIFA World Cup.
