A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the semi-final secured Colombia's spot in the Copa America final. Jefferson Lerma's goal made the difference in the 39th minute, but Colombia was forced to endure a tense conclusion as a result of Daniel Muñoz's suspension in the first half's stoppage time. Despite being reduced to ten men, Colombia managed to remain in the game, thereby establishing a thrilling final match against the World Champions and defending Copa America champions, Argentina. The final is expected to be an exciting matchup, as both teams are currently in high form.
After Thursday's Copa America semi-final at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium, a brawl broke out between Uruguayan players and some Colombian fans. Watching as Darwin Nunez of Liverpool threw blows at fans during Uruguay's 0-1 loss to Colombia, the official in charge was able to capture the incident on film.
Fans started hurling punches, cans, and caps as the Uruguayan players returned to the locker room following their disheartening loss. A fan filmed Nunez entering the stands and physically engaging with Colombian supporters, who seemed to be chanting and yelling at him. The fight also included Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid and Ronald Araujo of Barcelona.
Police and security officers moved quickly to calm the crowd and remove the players from the scene. Rumour has it that some supporters abused Nunez's family as he and other players went back out to the pitch to see them after the event.
Captain José MarÃa Giménez of Uruguay criticised Charlotte's security protocols, voicing worries for the players' families' safety and denouncing the hostile behaviour of Colombian supporters, who dominated the stands on Thursday. José MarÃa Giménez said:
“It’s a total disaster. There wasn’t a single police officer. They showed up half an hour later. A disaster. And we were there, standing up for ourselves, for our loved ones,".
“Our families are suffering because of some people who have a few drinks and don’t know how to drink, who act like children. Hopefully, they’ll take more precautions for the next game so this doesn’t happen again, because this is a disaster,"
Clearly disturbed by the event, Darwin Nunez was calmed down by seasoned striker Luis Suarez and Liverpool colleague Luis Diaz.
For Nunez and Uruguay, who battled with completing their chances in the Copa America semi-final, the evening was letdown. In the first half Nunez wasted three crucial chances; Colombia profited in the 39th minute when Jefferson Lerma scored a header from a corner.
When Colombia went down to just 10 men after Daniel Munoz got a second yellow card for elbowing Uruguay's Manuel Ugarte, the game grew more fierce. The game was distinguished by its ferocity; the referee handed one red and seven yellow cards.
