A French government spokesperson on Wednesday acknowledged that the disorder at the Champions League football final in Paris could have been handled better and promised an investigation that would "get to the bottom of the matter with transparency".

But despite being questioned by a journalist about the chaos that marred the match between Real Madrid and Liverpool, Olivia Gregoire insisted that there had been "no drama".

French authorities have defended police for indiscriminately firing tear gas and pepper spray at Liverpool supporters on Saturday.

They blamed industrial levels of fraud that saw up to 40,000 people try to enter the Stade de France with fake tickets or none at all.

But Gregoire said that at a cabinet meeting earlier in the day, President Emmanuel Macron and government members had expressedthat they were "sad and sorry" for the Liverpool fans who had a ticket but couldn't get into the stadium.

European soccer's governing body, UEFA, has started to gather evidence about issues outside the Stade de France that marred one of the world's biggest games in sports.

Gregoire said that interior and sports ministers would provide further details before a senate commission latter on Wednesday.

The chaotic scenes at the stadium prompted concerns in France and abroad as the country is set to host the Rugby World Cup next year and the 2024 Olympics.
