Following their second straight Euro final loss—this time against Spain in 2024— Gareth Southgate has lately left the England national football squad. Nowadays, people are debating who will take Southgate's position rather actively. As England will now focus on the FIFA World Cup 2026.
England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold voiced astonishment at the rumours that Jurgen Klopp, his former Liverpool coach, may take over as the new Three Lions manager. Marking England's second consecutive loss in Euro finals, Southgate quit two days following England's 2-1 loss to Germany.
Names such Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, and Lee Carsley have been floated widely about Southgate's successor following his departure. Though some sources have indicated Klopp as a possible contender, Alexander-Arnold voiced uncertainty about this prospect. Although he liked working under Klopp at Liverpool, he said he considers it improbable the German coach will go back to management following his exit from Anfield last season. He informed the Daily Mail:
“I enjoyed every moment I worked with him, we shared amazing memories, forged an amazing relationship, an amazing bond. So of course if that were to happen, we would pick up where we left off. I would be surprised if he did take it (though).”
"It was clear when he announced when he was leaving, the conversations I have had with him, everything on social media, he seems to be enjoying his time off, so it would be a huge surprise."
"I can only be thankful for every opportunity I have been given and the memories that we have shared. I do think Gareth is underrated. I think the England manager's job is one of the hardest jobs there is. You will always be judged, there is always speculation, people always have their opinions.
"But the way he has driven the team and the environment for the players is there for everyone to see. There was unity, everyone came together as a team, but every manager does come in for criticism. The way he dealt with it was incredible and yet again, he got us to a final."
Jurgen Klopp is anticipated to take a sabbatical of one year, since he has stated exhaustion as the rationale for ending his nearly ten-year term at Liverpool.
