ON THIS DAY: Lopetegui breaks down in tears at Real Madrid unveiling

On this day - 14th June - in 2018, Julen Lopetegui cried at his unveiling as Real Madrid's new head coach after being sacked as coach of Spain.

Lopetegui was dismissed just two days before the nation's 2018 World Cup opener against Portugal after it became public knowledge that he had been lined up to replace Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

That angered Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales, who said he was only told about the move five minutes before Real confirmed the news publicly, and Lopetegui was duly sacked.

At his Real unveiling, Lopetegui admitted that the previous 24 hours had been one of the worst days of his life.

There would be more tears just over six months later when Lopetegui was sacked following a poor run of form, culminating with a 5–1 away defeat to Barcelona in 'El Clasico'.
