The new European Super League explained

A club-owned breakaway Super League in European football came closer to reality on Sunday after confirmation from 12 elite clubs.

The clubs include AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur - PSG, Bayern Munich and Dortmund were all invited to join but rejected the plans.

The new league will be made up of 20 teams split into two groups with each team playing midweek fixtures both home and away.

The format of the new Super League will follow a knockout stage very similar to the Champions League.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been appointed in charge of the new Super League with several vice-presidents reportedly recruited.

According to reports, UEFA will ban every club and player participating in the league from all UEFA and FIFA competitions, as well as suing them.
