In the Copa America 2024, Uruguay beat Canada in a very close game that ended in a 2-2 tie. Uruguay won 3-4 in the game's penalty shootout. Ismaël Koné scored the first goal for Uruguay in the 22nd minute to equalize after Rodrigo Bentancur scored the goal in the 8th minute, and then Jonathan David scored for Canada in the 80th minute. Luis Suárez's important equaliser in extra time set Uruguay up for the penalties. During the whole game, both teams were very competitive, but in the end, Uruguay won a very exciting match at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, after beating Canada on penalties.

Luis Suarez scores a historic goal to save Uruguay in the 3rd place match against Canada

Becoming Uruguay's and the Copa America's oldest goalscorer, Luis Suarez netted in second-half stoppage-time against Canada in the third-place match at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, therefore creating history. Suarez was 37 years, five months, and 21 days young at the moment of scoring.

Previously, Angel Labruna of Argentina, who scored against Chile on January 29, 1956, at the age of 37 years and 34 days, held the record for the oldest goalscorer in Copa America.

Uruguay was behind 2-1 in the game after goals from Jonathan David and Ismael Kone. The first-time finish from a cross by José María Gimenez by Suarez levelled the score.

With Uruguay's all-time top scorer added to Suarez's record, his tally rose to 69 goals in his 142nd La Celeste game. Suarez had previously netted against Chile in a FIFA World Cup qualifying game on March 29, 2022 before this game. His timely goal against Canada was quite important since Uruguay finally won the bronze medal on penalties. Luis Suarez was named the man of the match and this could be his last ever international appearance for the international team. After the match, the Uruguan players were seen honoring him for his services to the national team
