Roberto Martinez claims Cristiano Ronaldo still needs to choose his international future after Portugal departs from the UEFA Euro 2024. Portugal lost to France in a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals on Friday. At 39, there is conjecture that Ronaldo's last national team appearance could be this one.
With 130 goals in 212 games for Portugal, Ronaldo has the most goals in international football. Still, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United great did not score in all of his 23 Euro 2024 efforts. His performances drew criticism, and he was clearly depressed after missing a penalty against Slovenia and after Portugal left France.
When asked whether Ronaldo's international career will conclude on this note, Martinez said (via Fabrizio Romano),
“We are suffering as a team, there’s no individual decision at this point”.
Ronaldo will go back to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr to get ready for the next season. Though studies indicate he is eager to compete in the 2026 World Cup, by which time he would be 41 years old, he will have to determine whether he wants to keep with the national squad.
